Buffer plans and prices

Buffer is one of the simplest social media schedulers to buy, because it charges per connected channel rather than per seat. That keeps solo budgets small, but the bill grows with every profile you connect, and the moment a second person needs to post the per-channel price doubles.

This guide walks through Free, Essentials and Team with prices checked against Buffer's official pricing page.

Prices below were recorded on 12 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works

Buffer bills per connected social channel, not per user. Essentials lists at USD 60 and Team at USD 120 per channel per year on annual billing. Channels connected on the Free plan are billed at the paid rate once you upgrade. Paid plans allow unlimited posts per channel, subject to a fair use cap of 5,000 posts per channel. Buffer's FAQ says channels above 10 are cheaper per channel, with lower rates for higher volume bands.

The tier trap

Essentials includes only one user, so the moment a second person needs to schedule posts or approve content you move to Team, doubling the price of every connected channel from USD 5 to USD 10 on annual billing.

Read this first. The buffer.com pricing page showed annual rates (USD 5 and USD 10 per channel a month, USD 60 and USD 120 a year). The monthly rates (USD 6 and USD 12) and the volume bands above 10 channels (USD 4, USD 3, then USD 1 or USD 2) come from an August 2026 NapoleonCat review, which is a competitor, and need confirming on Buffer's monthly toggle. Buffer's FAQ says annual billing gives 20% off and the page says "save 2 months", while the rates imply about 17%. Refund terms come from the same third-party source. The calculator is capped at 10 channels and uses annual rates, because the volume band rates for annual billing are not published.

Where the bill grows

A Buffer bill is channels multiplied by a plan rate. These are the places it moves.

Every channel is a line item

Each connected profile is billed, so test accounts, regional pages and abandoned profiles all add cost.

One user on Essentials

A second user means Team, which doubles the per-channel price.

Free channels become paid

Channels connected on Free are billed at the paid rate when you upgrade.

Fair use cap

Unlimited posting is capped at 5,000 posts per channel under fair use.

Approvals need Team

Approval workflows and custom permissions are Team only, so any review step forces the upgrade.

Which Buffer plan should you pick?

Free

Pick it if you post to 3 or fewer profiles and 10 queued posts per channel is enough.

Essentials

Pick it if one person schedules unlimited posts and wants analytics and reports.

Team

Pick it if several people post, or you need approvals, permissions or branded client reports.

Our view

Buffer is good value for small teams that want a clean scheduler without paying enterprise social suite prices. Essentials is hard to beat for a solo marketer, and Team stays inexpensive for a handful of channels. Agencies with dozens of profiles should model the volume bands before committing.

You may be overpaying if

You pay for channels you no longer post to, you moved to Team only for one occasional collaborator, or another social suite you already license covers the same scheduling.

How to pay less for Buffer

  1. Disconnect dead channels

Remove profiles you no longer post to before the next billing date, since every connected channel is billed.

  2. Pay annually

Annual billing is about 17% cheaper than monthly on list prices, though Buffer's FAQ says 20%.

  3. Stay on Essentials if one person posts

Move to Team only when several people truly need access or approvals.

  4. Use volume bands

Channels above 10 are billed at lower rates, so consolidate brands into one account rather than several.

  5. Price the alternatives

Hootsuite and Later give you a competing number before renewal.

Renewal email you can copy

Keeping Buffer spend under control

Channels get connected for campaigns and never removed. Each one keeps billing until someone prunes the list.

  • Track who holds a seat. Keep one list of paid seats, their owners and the date each was last used. Our guide to vendor management shows how to set that up.
  • Put renewals on a calendar. Log every renewal date and notice period in a contract renewal tracker so nobody finds out after the term rolls over.
  • Route new buys through one request. Cards and expense claims hide duplicate subscriptions. A short purchase requisition step catches them before the first payment.
  • Know your whole software bill. Pull every vendor into one view with a spend analysis template, then look at the tools with the fastest growth.

Bottom line. Start on Essentials if one person posts, move to Team only when collaboration or approvals are real needs, and pay annually once the channel list is stable. Prune channels before every renewal.

Buffer pricing questions

How much does Buffer cost per month?

Buffer Essentials costs USD 5 per channel per month billed annually (USD 60 a year) and Team USD 10 per channel (USD 120 a year). Monthly billing costs about USD 6 and USD 12 per channel. A free plan covers up to 3 channels.

Is there a free version of Buffer?

Yes. Buffer Free supports up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 100 ideas, 1 user and 30 days of insights. Paid plans also offer a 14-day free trial.

Does Buffer charge per user or per channel?

Buffer charges per connected social channel. Essentials includes 1 user, while Team includes unlimited users at USD 10 per channel per month on annual billing, so adding people on Team does not raise the bill.

Can you get a discount on Buffer?

Yes. Annual billing is cheaper than monthly, and Buffer says channels above 10 are billed at lower per-channel rates. The simplest saving is disconnecting channels you no longer post to, since every connected channel is billed.

Is Buffer cheaper billed annually?

Yes. Essentials drops from about USD 6 to USD 5 per channel per month and Team from about USD 12 to USD 10, roughly 17% less. For 10 channels on Team that saves USD 240 a year.

What is the cheapest alternative to Buffer?

Later Starter costs USD 18.75 a month billed yearly for one social set of profiles. Hootsuite starts at USD 99 a month on Standard and Sprout Social at USD 199 per seat, so both cost far more than Buffer for small teams.
