Social media management pricing in 2026: per-channel tools, per-seat tools and agency retainers

Three billing units, one decision: whether your team is bigger than your channel list, and what five seats cost on each model.

The short answer

Social media management software costs USD 5 to USD 12 per channel per month on Buffer, or USD 79 to USD 399 per seat per month on Sprout Social and Hootsuite. A 5-seat team pays USD 5,940 a year on Hootsuite Standard or USD 11,940 on Sprout Standard, against USD 1,200 for Buffer Team on 10 channels.

  • Cheapest real optionBuffer Essentials at USD 5 per channel per month on annual billing, with a free plan for 3 channels.
  • What most marketing teams needA per-seat tool at USD 79 to USD 199, where approvals, shared inbox and reporting start.
  • Biggest hidden costPer-seat billing with no volume discount, so each extra Sprout Standard seat adds USD 199 a month.
  • Best way to saveMatch the billing unit to your team, audit seats before renewal, and price an agency retainer alongside.

Social media management software plans and prices

Social media management is the category where two companies with identical requirements can pay twenty times different amounts, purely because of how their tool counts. One bills per channel and one bills per seat, and the cheaper answer depends on whether you have more accounts than people.

This guide prices three software tiers against the vendors' own pricing pages, adds agency retainer ranges from a dated 2026 source, and works out what five seats cost on each model so the comparison is in money and not in features.

Prices below were recorded on 17 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works

This category has three billing units, and picking the wrong one is the biggest cost mistake in it. Buffer bills per channel, so your bill is driven by how many accounts you publish to and not how many people work on them: Team at USD 10 a channel includes unlimited users. Sprout Social and Hootsuite bill per seat, so the bill is driven by headcount. Hootsuite's plans page prices per user with no volume discount shown, so each extra Standard seat adds USD 99 a month and each extra Sprout Standard seat adds USD 199. Both tools also cap social profiles on the entry plan, 10 accounts on Hootsuite Standard and 5 profiles on Sprout Essentials, so a multi-brand portfolio hits a cap before it hits a feature wall. Hootsuite publishes only annual per-user rates and says monthly billing is higher without naming the figure. Sprout's Premium Analytics, Listening and Employee Advocacy are separately priced add-ons with no published rate.

The tier trap

Sprout Social and Hootsuite both bill per seat with no published volume discount, so the trap is headcount and not features. Each extra Hootsuite Standard seat adds USD 99 a month and each extra Sprout Standard seat adds USD 199, which is how a five-person team can spend more on software than a small business spends on an agency retainer.

Read this first. Category guide. Sprout Social (USD 79, USD 199, USD 299 and USD 399 per seat, annual) and Hootsuite (USD 99 Standard, USD 199 Professional, up to USD 399 Advanced per user) were read on their own pricing pages on 17 October 2026. Hootsuite's page says "from" and "up to" and does not publish monthly rates or the currency, and it was read on a UK path, so re-check the dollar figures on the US page. Buffer's per-channel rates come from NapoleonCat, a Buffer competitor, published 26 August 2026, and not from buffer.com. An older February 2026 comparison listing Hootsuite at USD 19 and USD 99 was discarded because it conflicts with the current page. eClincher's agency ranges are dated 6 January 2026. The calculator prices per-seat tools only.

Where the bill grows

A social tool bill is a unit price times the wrong thing if you pick the wrong model. These are the places it moves.

Per seat with no published volume break

Hootsuite's plans page prices per user with no volume discount shown, so each extra Standard seat adds USD 99 a month and each Advanced seat up to USD 399. A team that doubles doubles the bill.

Listening and analytics are add-ons

Sprout Social's pricing page lists Premium Analytics, Listening and Employee Advocacy as separate add-ons on Standard and above, with no published prices, so the listening budget has to come from a quote.

Channel counts drive Buffer, not users

Buffer bills per channel. A brand on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest pays seven times the per-channel rate before a second person is added.

Hootsuite's monthly rate is not published

Hootsuite's plans page shows only annual per-user rates and states that monthly billing costs more per user without naming the figure, so the monthly premium is invisible until checkout.

Social account caps on the entry seat

Hootsuite Standard includes 10 social accounts and Sprout Social Essentials 5 profiles. A multi-brand or multi-region portfolio hits that cap long before it needs enterprise features.

Agency retainers exclude ad spend

Clutch notes that agency fees do not include ad spend, which has to be budgeted separately on top of the USD 500 to over USD 20,000 a month management retainer eClincher reports.

Which Social media management software plan should you pick?

Per-channel tools

Pick them if one or two people publish to a handful of accounts and you do not need an approval chain or listening.

Per-seat mid-market tools

Pick them if you need approvals, a shared inbox and reporting, and your profile count fits inside 5 to 10 accounts.

Per-seat enterprise tools

Pick them if social listening, employee advocacy and custom reporting are genuine requirements and you manage unlimited profiles.

Agency retainers

Pick them if the gap is content and strategy and not software, and you would otherwise be hiring to fill it.

Our view

Buffer is strong value for small teams because it charges for channels and not people, and Team at USD 10 a channel includes unlimited users. Sprout Social and Hootsuite earn their higher per-seat rates only when approvals, a shared inbox, listening and reporting are all used, because at five seats the gap is thousands a year. Before buying either, check whether an agency retainer at USD 2,000 a month would deliver more.

You may be overpaying if

You hold five Sprout or Hootsuite seats for a team where two people publish and three occasionally look at a report, or you are on an enterprise tier for listening you have never run a query in.

How to pay less for Social media management software

  1. Check which unit you are billed in

Buffer charges per channel with unlimited users on Team at USD 10. Sprout and Hootsuite charge per seat. If your team is larger than your channel list, the per-channel model is structurally cheaper.

  2. Audit seats, not logins

Per-seat tools bill for everyone provisioned. Pull the list of people who published, replied or built a report in the last 90 days, and remove the rest before renewal.

  3. Buy annually where the rate is published

Buffer drops from USD 6 to USD 5 per channel and Sprout Social Essentials from USD 99 to USD 79 per seat on annual billing. Hootsuite also prices annual lower but does not publish the monthly rate, so ask for both in writing.

  4. Use the free tiers and trials properly

Buffer Free covers 3 channels, Sprout Social offers 30 days with no card and Hootsuite 14 days. Run the trial with your real profile count and approval chain, because the caps are what bite.

  5. Price an agency retainer as a real option

eClincher reports small business retainers at USD 500 to USD 2,000 a month. Five Sprout Standard seats cost USD 995 a month, so the two options overlap and the comparison is worth making.

  6. Get add-on prices before you sign

Sprout publishes no price for Premium Analytics, Listening or Employee Advocacy. If listening is part of the business case, the quote has to include it.

What other buyers report

CostBench, citing Vendr data, reports a median Sprout Social contract of about USD 19,000 a year across 351 purchases with negotiated discounts averaging 14%, against a median Buffer contract of about USD 549 a year across 157 purchases. Source

Keeping Social media management software spend under control

Teams change faster than contracts. Audit the seat list every quarter and not only at renewal.

  • Count the users who log in. Sales, marketing and revenue operations often buy the same type of tool separately. Compare logins against paid seats before every renewal.
  • Calendar the renewal and notice window. Annual contracts for data and engagement tools often renew at a higher price. A renewal tracker keeps the date visible.
  • Check the data terms before you sign. Contact data brings privacy duties with it. Ask for the data processing terms during supplier onboarding, not after go-live.
  • Add the tool to your software spend view. Use a spend analysis template to see what go-to-market tools cost as a group.

Bottom line. Pick the billing unit that matches your team before you pick the product, buy annually where the rate is published, and audit the seat list every quarter. Get add-on quotes in writing before you sign.

Social media management software pricing questions

How much does social media management software cost per month?

Buffer costs USD 5 to USD 10 per channel per month on annual billing. Sprout Social runs USD 79 to USD 399 per seat and Hootsuite from USD 99 to USD 399 per user. Enterprise tiers on both are quote-only. Agency retainers start around USD 500 a month instead.

Is there a free social media management tool?

Yes. Buffer Free covers up to 3 channels for one user with basic scheduling. Hootsuite retired its free plan in March 2023 and now offers a 14-day trial with no card, while Sprout Social offers 30 days with no card. Free tiers cap channels, not features.

How much is enterprise social media management software?

Both Sprout Social and Hootsuite quote Enterprise and do not publish it. The highest published rates are Sprout Advanced at USD 399 per seat per month and Hootsuite Advanced at up to USD 399 per user. CostBench reports a median Sprout contract of about USD 19,000 a year.

Can you get a discount on social media management software?

Yes. Annual billing is the published saving: Buffer drops from USD 6 to USD 5 per channel and Sprout Essentials from USD 99 to USD 79 per seat. CostBench reports Sprout buyers negotiate about 14% off on average. Beyond that, cutting unused seats is the reliable lever.

Is it cheaper to hire an agency or buy the software?

It depends on team size. Five Sprout Standard seats cost USD 995 a month, and eClincher reports small business agency retainers at USD 500 to USD 2,000 a month. If the gap is content and strategy and not scheduling, the retainer often delivers more per dollar.

What is the cheapest social media management tool?

Buffer is the cheapest mainstream option at USD 5 per channel per month on annual billing, with a free plan covering 3 channels. Because Buffer Team at USD 10 a channel includes unlimited users, it stays cheapest for larger teams with short channel lists.
