Snowflake pricing in 2026: credit prices by edition and what storage costs

Every Snowflake edition credit price in plain numbers, why the edition multiplies every credit, and the idle warehouse and storage costs on top.

The short answer

Snowflake charges per credit and not per seat. On AWS US East, credits cost USD 2.00 on Standard, USD 3.00 on Enterprise, USD 4.00 on Business Critical and USD 6.00 on VPS, with storage at USD 23.00 per TB a month. A team burning 1,000 credits a month on Enterprise pays USD 36,000 a year at list price before storage.

  • Cheapest editionStandard at USD 2.00 per platform credit on AWS US East.
  • What most teams land onEnterprise at USD 3.00 a credit, which is USD 36,000 a year at 1,000 credits a month.
  • Biggest hidden costIdle warehouses, and Cloud Services once you pass the daily 10% free allowance.
  • Best way to saveTighten auto-suspend first, then move to a Capacity contract with the credit discount written down.

Snowflake plans and prices

Snowflake does not sell seats, so totals depend on how much compute your queries wake up. Every virtual warehouse burns platform credits while it runs, and the price of each credit is set by your edition, your cloud and region, and whether you are On Demand or on a Capacity contract.

This guide uses the credit prices in Snowflake's official Credit Consumption Table for AWS US East and US West, then shows where the bill grows.

Prices below were recorded on 17 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works

Every virtual warehouse burns platform credits while it runs. On AWS US East and US West the On Demand credit price is USD 2.00 on Standard, USD 3.00 on Enterprise, USD 4.00 on Business Critical and USD 6.00 on VPS. Storage is separate at USD 23.00 per TB per month On Demand in those regions, and Capacity storage starts at the same USD 23.00 in Tier 1, which covers annual contract values below USD 1.2 million, falling to USD 13.80 per TB at USD 40 million and above. Cloud Services, the layer that handles authentication, metadata and query compilation, is billed at 4.4 credits per hour, but a day's Cloud Services usage is free if it stays at or below 10% of the platform credits your virtual warehouses used that day. Capacity credit prices are the On Demand price minus the Platform Credit Discount in your Order Form, and that discount is not published.

The tier trap

The edition is not a feature toggle but a multiplier on every credit you will burn. Moving from Enterprise to Business Critical for one compliance requirement raises the price of all your compute by 33%, and VPS triples the Standard rate.

Read this first. Credit prices, storage rates, Capacity storage tiers and the Cloud Services rules (4.4 credits per hour, 10% daily allowance) were read on Snowflake's official Credit Consumption Table on 17 October 2026. Snowflake's marketing pages publish no credit prices and point to that table. Snowflake's edition feature comparison grid was not available, so edition feature differences are not listed here. Capacity credit prices are unpublished. The credit prices are for AWS US East and US West, and other clouds and regions differ. The Databricks entry price in the alternatives is not given, because its pricing table did not render at the time. No dated Snowflake price change was found.

What 1,000 credits a month cost on Enterprise, on Business Critical and with 50 TB of storage

A thousand credits a month shows how the edition multiplies compute and how storage sits outside the credit budget.

Enterprise plus 50 TB of on demand storage at USD 23.00 per TB a monthUSD49,800+USD 13,800

Where the bill grows

A Snowflake bill is credits multiplied by an edition rate, plus storage. These are the places it moves.

Cloud Services above the 10% line

Cloud Services bills at 4.4 credits an hour and is only free up to 10% of your daily warehouse credits. Heavy metadata and compilation work from small frequent queries pushes you over the line.

Storage sits outside the credit budget

At USD 23.00 per TB per month On Demand, 50 TB is USD 13,800 a year on top of all compute, and Capacity discounts on storage do not start until annual contract value passes USD 1.2 million.

Edition applies to everything

You cannot run one database on Business Critical and the rest on Enterprise. The edition sets the credit price for the whole account.

Idle warehouses still burn credits

Credits are consumed while a virtual warehouse is running, not only while a query is executing, so warehouses left on between jobs turn directly into invoice.

Capacity commitments are use-it-or-lose-it in practice

A Capacity contract buys a dollar commitment at a discounted credit price. Under-consume and you have prepaid for credits you never burned.

Region and cloud change the rate

The credit price verified here is for AWS US East and US West. Other clouds and regions carry different credit prices, so a region migration is also a price change.

Which Snowflake plan should you pick?

Standard

Pick it to get a first warehouse into production at the lowest credit price.

Enterprise

Pick it for most production data teams, and it is the edition Snowflake recommends at trial signup.

Business Critical

Pick it for regulated data where security and compliance requirements drive the edition.

Virtual Private Snowflake

Pick it if you need a dedicated, isolated environment.

Our view

Snowflake is strong for SQL warehousing and BI, and its price is a function of how disciplined you are with warehouses. Edition choice and idle time decide the bill more than negotiation does. Tighten auto-suspend and check the edition before you commit to a Capacity contract.

You may be overpaying if

Warehouses run between jobs, you sit on Business Critical for one requirement that a smaller scope could meet, or you committed to Capacity credits you have not burned.

How to pay less for Snowflake

  1. Tighten auto-suspend

Credits burn while a warehouse is running, so cutting idle time is the highest-impact change available and needs no negotiation.

  2. Check you are on the right edition

Dropping from Business Critical to Enterprise takes every credit from USD 4.00 to USD 3.00, which is USD 12,000 a year at 1,000 credits a month.

  3. Move to a Capacity contract once usage is predictable

Capacity pricing is the On Demand credit price minus the Platform Credit Discount in your Order Form, so a forecast you can defend is the lever.

  4. Watch the Cloud Services 10% line

Cloud Services is free only up to 10% of daily warehouse credits. Batching small frequent queries keeps that layer inside the allowance.

  5. Prune storage before you renew

On Demand storage is USD 23.00 per TB a month and Capacity storage discounts only begin above USD 1.2 million in annual contract value, so housekeeping beats negotiating.

  6. Bring a priced alternative to the table

BigQuery on demand at USD 6.25 per TiB scanned and Redshift Serverless at USD 0.375 per RPU hour are concrete reference points for a renewal conversation.

What other buyers report

Vendr reports a median Snowflake buyer spend of USD 100,000 a year, with contracts ranging from USD 20,000 to USD 600,000 and buyers saving about 8% on average, based on data from 738 purchases (page last updated February 2026). Source

Keeping Snowflake spend under control

Warehouses are created by analysts and left running. Credits post to a shared account that few people watch.

  • Match the plan to real volume. Analytics tools price by events, rows or users. Pull 90 days of real volume before you choose a tier.
  • Watch the overage rules. Find out what happens when you pass the limit. Some vendors bill the overage at a higher rate, others force a tier change.
  • Put the renewal on a calendar. Use a renewal tracker and review usage 90 days before the date.
  • Include the tool in your spend view. Add it to your spend analysis so growth in data tools is visible to finance.

Bottom line. Tighten auto-suspend, confirm the edition matches a real requirement, and move to a Capacity contract only once usage is predictable and the discount is in the Order Form. Prune storage before every renewal.

Snowflake pricing questions

How much does a Snowflake credit cost?

On AWS US East and US West, On Demand platform credits cost USD 2.00 on Standard, USD 3.00 on Enterprise, USD 4.00 on Business Critical and USD 6.00 on Virtual Private Snowflake. Capacity contracts lower that rate by a Platform Credit Discount set in your Order Form.

Is there a free version of Snowflake?

No. Snowflake offers a 30-day trial with USD 400 in credits and not a free tier, and you pick your edition, cloud and region at signup without being able to change them later. Snowflake recommends Enterprise for the trial.

How much does Snowflake cost at enterprise scale?

Snowflake does not publish enterprise contract prices, only credit rates. Vendr reports a median buyer spend of USD 100,000 a year across 738 purchases, with contracts running from USD 20,000 to USD 600,000 and average savings of about 8%.

Can you get a discount on Snowflake?

Yes. A Capacity contract lowers the credit price by the Platform Credit Discount in your Order Form, and storage drops below USD 23.00 per TB once annual contract value passes USD 1.2 million, reaching USD 13.80 per TB above USD 40 million.

Is Snowflake cheaper on an annual commitment?

Usually on the credit rate, but Capacity is a prepaid dollar commitment, so under-consuming means paying for credits you never burned. Snowflake does not publish the discount, so you need a defensible consumption forecast.

What is the cheapest alternative to Snowflake?

For infrequent query patterns, Google BigQuery on demand at USD 6.25 per TiB scanned with 1 TiB free a month is usually cheapest. Amazon Redshift Serverless at USD 0.375 per RPU hour with a 4 RPU minimum is the closest AWS-native option.
