Pricing guide, Data and AI Platform
Every Databricks workload rate in plain numbers, why the same job can cost three times more, and what sits on your cloud bill.
The short answer
Databricks charges per DBU, billed per second. On AWS Premium, Jobs Compute is USD 0.15, Jobs Serverless USD 0.35, All-Purpose Compute USD 0.55 and SQL Serverless USD 0.70 per DBU, and classic compute adds your cloud bill. One workspace using 10,000 Jobs DBUs a month pays USD 18,000 a year to Databricks before cloud VM costs.

Databricks does not sell seats. It meters compute in Databricks Units (DBUs), billed per second, and the rate depends on the workload type, the tier and the cloud. On classic compute you also pay your cloud provider for the virtual machines underneath, so the Databricks invoice is only part of the cost.
This guide uses the DBU rates on Databricks' official pricing pages for AWS US East, then shows where the bill grows.
Prices below were recorded on 12 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works
Databricks bills pay-as-you-go usage per second in DBUs, charged monthly to a card or invoice at price-list rates. Rates depend on workload type, tier (Premium or Enterprise) and cloud and region. Classic compute DBUs exclude the virtual machines, which your cloud provider bills separately, including idle time in instance pools. Serverless rates include the compute, carry a one-minute minimum and can incur data transfer charges. Committed-use contracts earn discounts, and Azure Databricks is billed through your Azure subscription.
The tier trap
The same notebook run as a scheduled job costs USD 0.15 per DBU on Jobs Compute but USD 0.55 on All-Purpose Compute. Teams that schedule notebooks on interactive clusters pay over 3.5 times the rate for identical work.
Read this first. DBU rates were read on databricks.com product pricing pages (Lakeflow Jobs, SQL, Interactive workloads) in a rendered browser on 12 October 2026, for AWS in US East (N. Virginia). Premium: Jobs USD 0.15, Jobs Serverless USD 0.35, SQL Classic USD 0.22, SQL Pro USD 0.55, SQL Serverless USD 0.70, All-Purpose USD 0.55, All-Purpose Serverless USD 0.75. Enterprise: Jobs USD 0.20, Jobs Serverless USD 0.45, All-Purpose USD 0.65, All-Purpose Serverless USD 0.95. Rates differ by cloud and region. Scenarios exclude cloud VM, storage and networking costs for classic compute and assume the same DBU count across compute types, which is a simplification. Committed-use discount levels are not published. Snowflake and BigQuery prices come from 2026 third-party sources.
Move the slider to see what each plan costs at your size. The figures use the list prices on this page and leave out tax, add-ons and any discount you negotiate.
The same 10,000 DBUs shows how much the compute type changes the Databricks bill, before cloud VM costs.
| Scenario | Cost per year | Against the headline |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs Compute, Premium, 10,000 DBUs a month (1 workspace) | USD18,000 | Headline price, plus cloud VMs |
| Same DBUs on Jobs Serverless, compute included (1 workspace) | USD42,000 | +USD 24,000 |
| Same DBUs run on All-Purpose clusters instead of Jobs (1 workspace) | USD66,000 | +USD 48,000 |

Pick it if you run scheduled pipelines and can manage cluster configuration.
Pick it if you want pipelines without cluster management and fast startup.
Pick it if analysts and BI tools need an always-ready SQL warehouse.
Pick it if data scientists need interactive notebooks, and keep scheduled jobs off these clusters.
Our view
Databricks is good value for teams running large-scale data engineering and ML on one platform, especially on Jobs Compute. It gets expensive when workloads land on the wrong compute type, clusters sit idle and nobody owns the cloud bill underneath the DBUs.
You may be overpaying if
Scheduled jobs run on All-Purpose clusters, clusters lack auto-termination, you pay on-demand rates at a steady spend level that would qualify for a commitment, or you enabled Photon on workloads that do not speed up.
Run scheduled work on Jobs Compute at USD 0.15 per DBU instead of All-Purpose at USD 0.55.
Cluster policies and idle timeouts stop paying for clusters nobody is using.
Serverless includes compute, so compare its DBU rate with classic DBUs plus your VM bill for each workload.
Databricks offers committed-use discounts, with bigger commitments earning better terms, including across clouds.
On classic compute, reserved or spot instances cut the cloud side of the bill.

| Alternative | Starting price | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Snowflake | About USD 2 per credit (Standard, AWS US East, on demand) | Your workload is mostly SQL warehousing and BI Read our Snowflake pricing guide |
| Google BigQuery | USD6.25 per TiB scanned (on demand, first 1 TiB a month free) | You run intermittent SQL analytics on Google Cloud |
| Amazon Redshift Serverless | USD0.375 per RPU-hour (US East) | You are on AWS and want a serverless SQL warehouse |
Usage bills are written by engineers choosing a cluster type. Nobody signs anything, and the invoice arrives after the work is done.
Bottom line. Put scheduled work on Jobs Compute, keep All-Purpose clusters for interactive use and test serverless where cluster overhead hurts. Once spend is predictable, negotiate a commitment instead of paying on demand.
Databricks charges per DBU, billed per second. On AWS Premium in US East, Jobs Compute is USD 0.15, Jobs Serverless USD 0.35, SQL Pro USD 0.55, All-Purpose Compute USD 0.55 and SQL Serverless USD 0.70 per DBU. Classic compute also incurs cloud VM costs from your provider.
Yes. Databricks Free Edition gives free, limited access for learning data and AI tools. For production use there is a 14-day free trial, some trials include credits, and if you connect your own cloud account, your cloud provider still bills for compute.
A Databricks Unit (DBU) is a measure of processing power used by your workload, billed per second. Each compute type has its own DBU rate, from USD 0.15 for Jobs Compute to USD 0.75 for All-Purpose Serverless on AWS Premium.
Yes. Databricks offers committed-use discounts, with larger commitments earning better terms and the option to use them across clouds. Vendr reports buyers save about 13% on average, with a median contract of USD 333,333 a year.
Per DBU, yes. Jobs Serverless is USD 0.35 against USD 0.15 for classic Jobs Compute on AWS Premium. But serverless includes the compute, while classic adds your cloud VM bill and idle time, so compare total cost per workload.
For occasional SQL analytics, Google BigQuery on demand charges USD 6.25 per TiB scanned with the first 1 TiB each month free. Snowflake Standard runs about USD 2 per credit on AWS US East, and Amazon Redshift Serverless is USD 0.375 per RPU-hour.
