Clio plans and prices

Clio is the best-known practice management platform for small and mid-sized law firms, but its pricing has become harder to read. Only the entry plan has a public price, and the tiers most firms actually need are quoted after a sales call.

This guide explains what each plan includes, what third-party sources and buyers report paying, and what drives the quote.

Prices below were recorded on 12 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works

Clio charges per user, and reportedly says annual billing saves 16% to 22% over monthly. Only EasyStart shows a starting price, and Essentials, Advanced and Expand are priced after a sales conversation. Clio Grow is included only on Expand, Manage AI (formerly Clio Duo) is a quoted add-on on Essentials and above, and Clio Payments charges processing fees per transaction on top of the subscription.

The tier trap

The client portal and document templates start on Essentials, which has no public price, so most firms move from a known USD 49 entry price to a sales quote as soon as they need to share files with clients.

Read this first. Clio's pricing page blocked automated access (HTTP 403). Per checkthat.ai (updated 15 July 2026), the page publishes only EasyStart "from USD 49/user/month" and puts Essentials, Advanced and Expand (formerly Complete) behind "Get Pricing", quoting "Annual billing saves over 16% to 22%". Third-party estimates for the gated tiers conflict: about USD 89, USD 119 and USD 149 (CounselStack, TrueReview) against USD 79, USD 109 and USD 139 annual (CostBench). This page uses USD 89 and USD 119 only as labeled estimates. CostBench also lists EasyStart at USD 39 annual and USD 49 monthly, so whether USD 49 is the annual or monthly rate needs confirming. The trial (7 days, no card) and payment fees (2.95% card, 1% eCheck) are third-party. Vendr shows a median and range but no purchase count.

What 10 users cost on EasyStart, Essentials and Advanced at estimated rates

Clio publishes only the entry price, so this table uses third-party estimates for the quoted tiers. Treat it as a planning range.

Where the bill grows

A Clio bill is users multiplied by a tier, plus extras. These are the places it moves.

Quoted tiers

Essentials, Advanced and Expand are priced by sales, so firms compare quotes instead of list prices.

Payment processing

Clio Payments charges about 2.95% per card transaction and 1% for eCheck, on top of the subscription.

Client intake

Clio Grow is only included on Expand, so on lower tiers intake and CRM need an upgrade.

AI add-on

Manage AI (formerly Clio Duo) is quoted separately and is not available on EasyStart.

Monthly billing

Clio reportedly says annual billing saves 16% to 22%, so monthly plans cost noticeably more per user.

Which Clio plan should you pick?

EasyStart

Pick it if you are a solo or very small firm that needs billing, time tracking and documents.

Essentials

Pick it if you need a client portal, templates and broader integrations.

Advanced

Pick it if you want workflow automation, custom reports and priority support.

Expand

Pick it if you want Clio Grow intake and CRM included with practice management.

Our view

Clio is a safe choice for small and mid-sized firms because it is widely used and integrates with most legal tools. The quote-only upper tiers make it easy to overbuy, so firms should price Essentials and Advanced against MyCase and PracticePanther before signing.

You may be overpaying if

You pay for Expand but do not use Clio Grow, you license users who only view matters, or you accepted a quote without comparing published prices from MyCase, PracticePanther or CosmoLex.

How to pay less for Clio

  1. Pay annually

Clio reportedly says annual billing saves 16% to 22% versus monthly.

  2. Get it in writing

Ask for a written quote per tier and per user before any trial ends.

  3. License only active users

Remove departed staff and occasional viewers before renewal.

  4. Skip bundled extras you will not use

Only take Expand if Clio Grow replaces an intake tool you would otherwise buy.

  5. Compare published prices

MyCase, PracticePanther and CosmoLex all publish per-user prices you can bring to the quote.

  6. Negotiate term and caps

Ask for a multi-year rate with capped increases.

What other buyers report

Vendr reports a median Clio contract of USD 19,768 a year, with deals ranging from about USD 10,089 to USD 51,961. Source

Keeping Clio spend under control

Law firm software is picked by partners and administered by office managers. Quotes arrive by email and renewals follow the same path.

  • Track who holds a seat. Keep one list of paid seats, their owners and the date each was last used. Our guide to vendor management shows how to set that up.
  • Put renewals on a calendar. Log every renewal date and notice period in a contract renewal tracker so nobody finds out after the term rolls over.
  • Route new buys through one request. Cards and expense claims hide duplicate subscriptions. A short purchase requisition step catches them before the first payment.
  • Know your whole software bill. Pull every vendor into one view with a spend analysis template, then look at the tools with the fastest growth.

Bottom line. Start on EasyStart if it covers your needs, and treat every higher tier as a negotiation backed by published competitor prices. Pay annually once the firm is settled and review users and add-ons 90 days before renewal.

How much does Clio cost per user?

Clio EasyStart starts from USD 49 per user per month. Essentials, Advanced and Expand are quoted by sales, and third-party sources estimate about USD 89 and USD 119 per user per month for Essentials and Advanced. Vendr reports a median Clio contract of USD 19,768 a year.

Is there a free version of Clio?

No. Clio has no free plan. Third-party reviews report a 7-day free trial with no credit card required, after which you need a paid plan.

How much is Clio Expand?

Clio does not publish an Expand price and quotes it through sales. Expand, formerly called Complete, adds Clio Grow for client intake and CRM to the Advanced plan. Third-party estimates put it near USD 149 per user per month.

PracticePanther Solo costs USD 49 per user per month billed annually, MyCase Basic costs USD 50, and CosmoLex Launch is listed at USD 49 per user per month. All three publish their prices.

Procurement VMS is a ratings and comparison site, not a software vendor, and nobody paid for a place in this guide. Spot a number that has changed? Tell us on the contact page and we will check it.
