Accounts payable automation for Irish finance teams
'Accounts payable automation' leads Irish AP searches, at about 70 a month. With Revenue's roadmap putting large corporates on structured e-invoicing from November 2028, Irish AP teams now have a date to plan software around.
The short answer
Accounts payable automation for Irish companies should capture VAT across 23%, 13.5% and 9% rates, recognise reverse charge invoices from EU suppliers, handle RCT payments for principal contractors, match to POs, route approvals and pay by SEPA. It must post to Sage 50, Xero, NetSuite, Dynamics 365 or SAP, and have a clear plan to receive EN 16931 e-invoices from November 2028.
November 2028 puts a date on Irish AP automation
Irish AP teams have automated slowly, partly because there was no external deadline. Revenue's roadmap provides one. Large corporates move to structured e-invoicing for domestic B2B in November 2028, and businesses trading within the EU follow in November 2029.
That changes what you should buy. A tool built mainly to read PDF invoices will still be useful for small and overseas suppliers, but most domestic invoices for large companies will arrive as EN 16931 data. The AP tool needs to receive them, through Peppol or another accredited route, and match them automatically.
Shared service centres have a head start and a harder job. Many already process e-invoices for Italy, Spain or France. Adding Ireland is easier if the AP platform already handles several EU regimes in one queue.
What Ireland asks of a ap automation software
Irish AP capture needs to separate VAT by rate, recognise reverse charge invoices with no VAT shown, and flag RCT payments for principal contractors. Payments run on SEPA, so check how payment files are produced and how IBAN changes are verified.

Start where your team actually is
If you are a large corporate, start with the 2028 plan. Smaller businesses can start with capture and approvals.
Find where invoices wait
Track ten invoices in Ireland from arrival to payment and note where each one stalls.
Compare exception handling
Ask each vendor what happens to a Irish invoice that does not match its PO.
Lock down the payment side
Review bank detail controls and payment run approvals before you choose a tool for Ireland.
Requirements to put in your Ireland ap automation RFP
These rows test whether an AP tool suits Irish invoices, payments and the 2028 roadmap.
| Requirement | Why it matters in Ireland | Ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| 1VAT capture by rate | Irish invoices can show several rates. | Run 50 of our invoices and show accuracy on each VAT rate and amount. |
| 2Reverse charge recognition | EU invoices arrive without Irish VAT. | How does the system recognise reverse charge and post self-accounted VAT? |
| 3RCT payments | Principal contractors must apply the deduction rate Revenue sets. | Can AP apply the eRCT deduction rate to subcontractor payments? |

Small teams
Sage 50 or Xero plus a capture tool removes most keying. Watch the 2029 intra-EU phase if you buy from the EU.
Mid-market
PO matching, approvals and SEPA runs. Ask every vendor for a written e-invoicing roadmap.
Enterprise
Shared service centres need multi-country e-invoicing, high-volume exception handling and supplier portals.
Mapping the vendor field
Irish AP buyers see UK, US and EU vendors. EU-based vendors often have more e-invoicing experience, while UK and US vendors may lead on capture and usability.
AP automation specialists
Capture, matching, approvals and payments as a layer over your ERP.
Procure-to-pay suites with AP
AP inside a wider purchasing suite, strongest where POs live in the same place.
Spend platforms and ERP AP
Bill pay from spend platforms, or the AP module that came with your ERP.

How a Ireland ap automation rollout usually runs
A single-entity Irish AP rollout usually takes a few weeks. E-invoicing readiness is a separate workstream for large corporates.
Measure today
Count invoices, VAT corrections and approval time.
Configure capture and tax codes
Map each VAT rate and reverse charge case to ledger codes.
Set approvals and SEPA runs
Build approval routes and a separate payment run approval.
Plan the 2028 switch
Agree with your vendor how e-invoices will arrive and test before the deadline.

Good tools recognise reverse charge invoices and post self-accounted VAT. Test with your own EU supplier invoices.
Some can record the rate from eRCT and apply it to payments. Others leave it to the ERP. Ask how it works in practice.
Yes. Public bodies must be able to receive e-invoices under EU rules, and Ireland uses Peppol for public sector e-invoicing.
