Twilio has no plans to compare in the usual sense. You pay per message, per minute or per verification, and the list rate is only the start. Carriers add their own per-message fees, long texts split into several billed segments, and phone numbers, registration and support plans add fixed costs.
This guide covers Twilio's messaging, voice, WhatsApp and Verify APIs with US rates checked on Twilio's official pricing pages. Email and customer data have their own guides: see SendGrid pricing and Segment pricing.
Prices below were recorded on 12 October 2026. The headline figure is the lowest price you can get for that plan. Check the official page before you buy, because vendors change prices without notice.

How billing works
Twilio bills usage with no plan fee. US SMS is billed per segment, sent or received, and MMS per message, and carriers add their own per-message fees on top based on the recipient's network. Phone numbers are billed monthly, from USD 1.15 for a local number and USD 2.15 for toll-free, and messages that end in a Failed status cost USD 0.001 each. Paid support plans are charged as the greater of a monthly minimum or a percentage of your monthly Twilio spend.
The tier trap
There are no plan tiers, but there is a support trap. Free Developer support has no guaranteed response times, and Production support costs the greater of USD 250 a month or 4% of spend. Any team running SMS or voice in production should budget at least USD 3,000 a year for it.
Read this first. The scope here is Twilio's messaging, voice, WhatsApp and Verify APIs only. SendGrid and Segment have their own guides. Rates are US pay-as-you-go list prices read on Twilio's pricing pages. OPEN FLAG: the 10DLC fees (USD 4.50 or USD 46 brand, USD 15 campaign vetting, USD 1.50 to USD 10 monthly) come from search excerpts of Twilio's help article, which blocked direct fetching, so confirm them on the article. The June 2025 SMS increase is from UsagePricing's comparison of archived page snapshots, not a Twilio announcement. The short code price is shown as listed ("USD 1,000, billed quarterly, plus setup fee"), so confirm whether that is a monthly rate. The trial credit amount is not stated on the page. Vendr's USD 200,000 median likely spans all Twilio products. The Spendflo URL is a vendor profile page, not a pricing guide.
Move the slider to see what each plan costs at your size. The figures use the list prices on this page and leave out tax, add-ons and any discount you negotiate.
Twilio bills by usage, so this table follows one account sending 100,000 US texts a month through carrier fees and a Production support plan.
| Scenario | Cost per year | Against the headline |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 US SMS a month at the base rate (1 account) | USD9,960 | Headline price |
| Add carrier fees at the T-Mobile rate of USD 0.0045 (1 account) | USD15,360 | +USD 5,400 |
| Add Production support at the USD 250 monthly minimum (1 account) | USD18,360 | +USD 8,400 |

Our view
Twilio is reasonable value for teams that want reliable, well-documented APIs and pay-as-you-go flexibility. Its base SMS rate sits slightly above rivals like Plivo and Sinch, and carrier fees, registration and support plans push the real cost well above the headline, so it pays to negotiate once volume is steady.
You may be overpaying if
You send long messages that split into several segments, still pay list rates at hundreds of thousands of messages a month, or pay for Business support when Production response times would do.
Keep texts within one segment and avoid special characters that shrink segment length.
Committed-use pricing is available through sales, and Verify custom pricing typically starts at 100,000 or more verifications a month.
WhatsApp at USD 0.005 per message, or push and TOTP verification with no channel fee, can replace SMS in some flows.
Failed messages still cost USD 0.001 each, and carrier fees apply to every outbound segment.
Production support starts at USD 250 a month, so move up only when you need 24/7 one-hour response.
Plivo, Telnyx and Sinch publish lower base SMS rates you can use in negotiation.
What other buyers report
Vendr reports buyers pay a median of USD 200,000 a year for Twilio, with deals ranging from USD 24,000 to USD 950,000 across 273 purchases and average savings of 15% (February 2026). Source

If this vendor does not fit, these are the closest options and what they charge.
| Alternative | Starting price | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Plivo | USD0.0077 per US SMS (long code, plus carrier fees) | You want a similar API at a slightly lower base rate |
| Telnyx | USD0.004 per US SMS part (plus carrier fees) | You send high volume and want the lowest published base rate |
| Sinch | USD0.0078 per US SMS (10DLC, plus carrier fees) | You want another major provider's quote at a lower base rate |
Messaging spend follows product features. A new reminder flow or a longer template changes the segment count, and the invoice is the first place anyone sees it.
Bottom line. Twilio is easy to start and hard to budget, because the rate card is only part of the bill. Model carrier fees, segments and support before you launch, then negotiate committed pricing once volume is steady.
Twilio charges USD 0.0083 per US SMS segment, sent or received, on long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes. Carriers add USD 0.0035 to USD 0.005 per outbound segment, so a typical US text costs about USD 0.0118 to USD 0.0133 all in.
No. Twilio offers a free trial with no credit card required, but there is no permanent free plan. After the trial you pay per message, minute or verification, plus monthly fees for phone numbers.
A US local number costs USD 1.15 a month and a toll-free number USD 2.15 a month, or USD 0.50 a month if you bring your own number. Short codes cost far more, with a random short code listed at USD 1,000, billed quarterly, plus a setup fee.
Yes, at volume. Voice minutes and phone numbers get automatic discounts at higher monthly thresholds, and committed-use pricing is negotiated through sales. Vendr reports buyers save 15% on average. There is no annual billing discount.
Twilio Verify costs USD 0.05 per successful verification plus a channel fee. In the US, an SMS verification costs USD 0.05 plus USD 0.0083 per message, while push and TOTP verifications have no channel fee.
Telnyx lists US SMS at USD 0.004 per message part plus carrier fees, and Plivo at USD 0.0077 per message on long codes. Both offer APIs similar to Twilio, so they make useful benchmarks before a committed-use negotiation.
